ERIC AT THE BRUCE ALMIGHTY PREMIERE - 2003
Posted by Gwen in Online articles (2003) on 30 Aug 2008 ||

Eric Christian Olsen has the very difficult task of trying to walk in Jim Carrey's shoes. Olsen plays the younger version of "Dumb and Dumber's" Lloyd, the role originally played by Carrey in the 1994 Farrelly Bros. hit comedy.

Olsen flew in from New York to attend the World Premiere of Carrey's "Bruce Almighty" just to get a chance to meet the man himself. Here's what Olsen had to say about imitating Carrey's style and Olsen also provides a brief preview of what to expect from "Dumb and Dumberer."

    ERIC CHRISTIAN OLSEN ('Lloyd')

So prior to filming "Dumb and Dumberer" you'd never met Jim Carrey?
Not yet, that's why I'm here. I watched the film a million times. I watched Lloyd a million times. I'm really nervous; I flew back from New York just to be here. I said, “I've got to get out here and see this. This is the master at work.”

What's it like doing a younger version of Jim Carrey?
It was a blast. I think he created such an amazing character with Lloyd, he created such a foundation to go with in that film. I'm so excited and I hope he loves it.

Was it a bit scary taking on a role like that?
Of course it was. Any time you've got somebody like [Jim Carrey] - he's the best that's out there. That's a great character to jump into and a wonderful opportunity. I hope I make him happy.

Do you copy his physical mannerisms?
Yeah, exactly. You've got to do 'Lloyd' because that's the character. It's him at 18 so it's the beginning of the evolution of what he was in the original film.

What can we expect from "Dumb and Dumberer?"
You are going to see so much stuff, it's so funny. I can't tell you (laughing). You have to go see it.

Will fans fall in love with it right away?
I hope so. What was really so great about the first one, besides the physical comedy which was phenomenal, is the relationship between Jim and Jeff [Daniels] in the first one. I think we really tried to spend a lot of time trying to capture that relationship from the first one. And you do see it. When you watch it you really love these two characters together. That's one of the things you can expect, the buddy relationship between those two characters is really going to come through.

Is there a love triangle in this one?
    There is!

    Who wins?
I can't tell (laughing). I can't tell you that, I'd be giving away the ending (laughing).
