ERIC SURPRISES HIMSELF WITH D&D ROLE - 2003
Posted by Gwen in Online articles (2003) on 30 Aug 2008 ||
By Bonnie Churchill (July 4, 2003) - The Manila Times

Eric Christian Olsen sat squirming in the leather chair. He knew he could do the role Jim Carrey first performed so hilariously in Dumb and Dumber, but he didn't look anything like him. Would the film's makers even consider him for the role?

As he sat waiting to go into the producer and director's office, he began talking to himself. It went something like this: "I had to use the research I had, and my textbook was the original film?. I wanted to have Carrey's nuances and mannerisms down, so I could give the best performance possible. When the studio saw me, they agreed," Olsen said with pride. "I was a ringer for Carrey."

The studio really liked the energy and innocence Olsen brought to the role. In his character's mind, he's smart, so when he makes a stupid mistake the audience goes along with it and laughs at his plight. Olsen found co-star Derek Richardson a wonderful companion. Richardson, who had never made a film before, was so natural and relaxed. Many of their improvisations were so good, the scenes ended up in the film.

He came to Hollywood five years ago from Iowa, to attend Pepperdine University. He only has three more classes in his foreign language major -- Japanese -- to complete his degree. The reason he has not finished is that movie-making makes studying Japanese impossible.

"Don't worry, I will graduate. I have to, because it's important to my family and me. My father is an English professor, my mother a non-denominational chaplain, and my older brother is a Navy Seal. My childhood memories are filled with my dad's reading me the literature of the ages and my mother's sage sayings."

Olsen has regained 11 of those pounds, his hair is getting lighter, and he still feels it was all worthwhile. "It's my best break to date. I did a series for Fox, Get Real, had a dramatic part in ER in which I died after an accident, and a good role on TV with Kiefer Sutherland in 24." Dumb and Dumberer is his first film.

"I think my favorite advice is happiness is the journey, happiness is not the destination. It's like I used to think, I want to get my first commercial, then I want my first TV role, then my first movie, but I've stopped that. I realize it's the journey. So I am happy at doing whatever comes into my experience to do. It's finding what's great about whatever you are doing at that moment, whether it's school, surfing, acting or rock climbing. It's about finding those moments, and enjoying them for what they are."

Olsen hasn't attended any dramatic academy; he's literally learned by doing. Working at a Los Angeles comedy club taught him a lot about timing, waiting for the laugh and delivering a punch line.

"I'm not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. I've seen too many young people drive themselves bonkers doing that. My agent called me the other day and said, 'Where are you?' I told him I was returning his call from Cabo San Lucas (Mexico)."

"I think my parents have had the most influence on me. They instilled in me a feeling of self-worth. They have made me see how important it is to change and grow. It is a part of life."
